A social media storm has erupted after a Nigerian man took to X (formerly Twitter) to blast former Super Eagles striker, Emmanuel Emenike, accusing him of allegedly threatening the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, over the ongoing demolition of illegal structures across the state.
The issue began when clips and screenshots circulated online showing Emenike’s apparent frustration with the Lagos State government’s demolition exercise, which targets structures built on waterways, drainage channels, and other unauthorised locations. In the viral video, Emenike allegedly expressed anger at the government, lamenting the hardship being inflicted on ordinary people whose properties were destroyed in the process.
However, his comments did not sit well with several Nigerians online, one of whom, identified as @GoziconC, sharply criticised the ex-footballer for what he called “misplaced priorities and selective outrage.”
Critic accuses Emenike of bias
In a now-viral tweet, @GoziconC called out Emenike for reportedly issuing threats to the Lagos governor while staying silent about similar demolitions in the South-East region. The user argued that Emenike’s reaction was biased and hypocritical, especially since he resides in Lagos but failed to challenge the same actions carried out by leaders in his home region.
He wrote: “Former Footballer, Emmanuel Emenike is threatening Gov. Sanwo-Olu over the demolition of illegal structures in Lagos. This clown has never threatened IPOB over the killing of innocent civilians in Southeast.
“Emenike has never threatened Soludo, Otti, and Peter Mbah over the demolition of illegal structures in Southeast. And to worsen it all, he lives in Lagos instead of Southeast.”

Debate over Lagos demolition deepens
The post quickly gained traction, drawing thousands of reactions and igniting a heated debate among Nigerians on social media. Many users took sides — while some backed the critic, accusing Emenike of inconsistency and emotional bias, others defended the ex-Super Eagles player, insisting that he had every right to voice his frustration as a Lagos resident directly affected by the government’s actions.
Supporters of Emenike argued that the demolition, though aimed at urban renewal, has displaced many hardworking citizens without prior notice or compensation. They claimed that Emenike’s outrage reflected the voice of the masses who feel victimised by government decisions that often appear sudden and inconsiderate.
On the other hand, those supporting the government maintained that the exercise was necessary to restore order and prevent future flooding disasters in Lagos, one of Nigeria’s most densely populated cities. According to them, the demolition drive is part of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s larger urban planning reforms intended to protect lives and ensure a cleaner environment.
Public divided as discussion continues
As the online feud continues, more Nigerians are weighing in on the matter, with many urging public figures like Emenike to choose their words carefully and use their platforms responsibly. Some commentators called for empathy toward displaced residents but also stressed that illegal structures must not be tolerated in a modern city like Lagos.
Whether seen as a cry for justice or a misplaced rant, the controversy surrounding Emmanuel Emenike’s alleged threat to Governor Sanwo-Olu has once again highlighted the tension between public sentiment and government policies. As discussions unfold, it remains to be seen whether Emenike will address the accusations or clarify his statements regarding the ongoing demolitions.
