A Nigerian man has publicly come forward to shed light on what he describes as alleged mistakes committed by the late renowned evangelist, Rev Dr Uma Ukpai, during his ministry. His revelations, shared through social media, have sparked discussions across online platforms, particularly among followers of prominent church leaders in Nigeria.
Identifying himself as Elder Okechukwu, the man explained that he previously adhered to teachings which he now believes were misguided and divergent from the true message of the gospel. According to him, certain popular clerics, including the late Uma Ukpai, promoted what he terms “a different gospel, a different Jesus, and a different spirit,” which led him astray before he discovered what he considers the authentic gospel of Christ.
Elder Okechukwu Speaks Out
In a detailed post on Facebook, Elder Okechukwu recounted his spiritual journey, explaining that it became his duty to critique the teachings of the late evangelist while also warning other church leaders to avoid similar errors. He emphasized that his intention was not merely to criticize but to potentially save lives by steering followers toward the true message of Christianity.
He wrote, “This should be my final post on Dr Uma Ukpai, made with full understanding that it is my DUTY, OBLIGATION to JUDGE (John 7:24/1 Corinthians 5:12-13) and for those general overseers still alive, if at all possible to SAVE them by rebuking and correcting. Even if the general overseers are not SAVED, because the Bible actually hints it may be a near Sisyphean task to save them, at least let some of their followers be SAVED. I too once believed in a different gospel, a different Jesus, a different spirit preached by many famous, popular and respected men. The efforts of others along with GOD’S GRACE brought me to THE TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL. When will those who claim to be Believers in CHRIST learn? Dr Uma Ukpai made the same mistakes as many other general overseers are still making, not repenting from dead works and works of the law…”
Critique of the Late Preacher
Elder Okechukwu further elaborated that any teaching that diverts attention from the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ, replaces grace with personal effort, or substitutes genuine sonship with slavish adherence to human works constitutes a different gospel entirely. He warned that those preaching such messages are accursed and urged believers to exercise discernment in following spiritual leaders.
He explained, “…Any message that detracts from CHRIST’S atoning sacrifice and replaces GRACE with effort, SONSHIP with slavery, or TRUTH with theatrics and Lamba is another gospel entirely (Galatians 1:6–9). Those who preach it are accursed. Believers must test to every spirit (1 John 4:1), cling to sound doctrine (2 Timothy 4:2–4), and reject these seductive imitations of the true CHRIST…”
Warning to Other Church Leaders
Beyond critiquing the late evangelist, Elder Okechukwu used the platform to caution other church general overseers, urging them to reflect critically on their own teachings. He highlighted that even if some leaders may not be saved, rebuking and correcting them could serve to protect their followers from being misled and help them embrace the true gospel of Christ.
His post has generated significant attention, with many followers discussing the importance of testing every spiritual teaching and ensuring that doctrines align with the core message of Christianity. The revelations have ignited conversations about accountability, discernment, and spiritual leadership within Nigerian churches.
