Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) page, Dr Bishop narrated how the confession came unexpectedly right before the patient was taken into the operating theatre for an emergency bowel obstruction surgery.

The doctor revealed that as preparations were underway and the surgical team was getting ready, the patient suddenly requested to “make a confession.” The team, initially confused, assumed it might be something serious or spiritual, so they asked whether he wanted them to call a priest or a family member.

However, the patient insisted that the confession was meant for the doctors alone. Curious and slightly tense, Dr Bishop decided to draw closer to hear what the patient had to say.

According to the doctor, what followed was both shocking and amusing. The patient whispered softly: “Doctor, I know you said I shouldn’t eat or drink anything, but I was too hungry. I told my younger brother to sneak in some eba and ogbono soup, and I just finished it about 30 minutes ago.”

The entire medical team burst into laughter, relieved that it wasn’t a spiritual or life-threatening confession, even though the admission explained a lot about the patient’s worsening condition.

Dr Bishop later admitted that it was one of the most “helpful confessions” he had ever received, as it provided vital information that could have affected the surgery’s outcome.

The doctor’s post quickly went viral on social media, with hundreds of users reacting humorously to the story. Many Nigerians joked about the irresistible pull of traditional meals like eba and ogbono soup, saying it was understandable why the patient couldn’t resist the temptation even in critical condition.

Some commenters also praised the patient’s honesty, while others imagined how the doctors must have tried to maintain their composure in the operating room after hearing the confession.

The post has since sparked lighthearted conversations online about Nigerians’ deep love for food and the hilarious situations it sometimes leads to.
