Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has set a strict dress code for his newly appointed commissioners and board members, directing them to wear the symbolic “Asiwaju cap” associated with President Bola Tinubu during all official meetings and functions. The governor emphasised that adherence to this code is non-negotiable and that any official who fails to comply would be asked to leave immediately, underlining the importance of this symbolic gesture in demonstrating loyalty and respect to the President and the administration’s vision.
Governor Okpebholo made the announcement during the swearing-in ceremony of 19 new commissioners and board members in Benin City on 14 October 2025. Addressing the appointees, he stated clearly: “I will not forgive any commissioner that is not wearing Tinubu Asiwaju’s cap. If you’re coming to EXCO meeting without the cap, you’re going back.” He went further to clarify that the directive applied irrespective of the type of attire, saying: “In EXCO, if you are not wearing a suit, and you are wearing a traditional dress, and you come without this Asiwaju cap, you are going back.”

The governor explained that the requirement to wear the Asiwaju cap is not merely about fashion but is symbolic of the support the state government has received from President Tinubu, which has been instrumental in facilitating the appointments and the administration’s ability to implement its policies effectively. He highlighted that presidential backing is a critical component for the success of governance in Edo State, helping to ensure stability and effective policy execution.
Beyond the dress code, the governor used the occasion to encourage the new appointees to embrace their roles as opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the development of the state. He warned that corruption, negligence, or any actions undermining the integrity of his administration would not be tolerated and could lead to dismissal. Governor Okpebholo emphasised that the administration’s focus is on delivering tangible results and ensuring accountability at all levels of government.

The directive is expected to set a precedent for the state government, reinforcing the significance of symbolism, discipline, and allegiance in Edo’s political and administrative landscape. Observers have noted that Governor Okpebholo’s approach aims to align his administration closely with federal support while maintaining strict internal standards, sending a clear message about the level of commitment expected from all commissioners and board members moving forward.
