Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, has officially tendered his resignation amid widespread allegations of certificate forgery, a development that has generated significant public attention across the country.
According to reports, the embattled minister was accused of submitting forged academic certificates allegedly obtained from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka b, and the National Youth Service Corps b, claims which have since cast doubt on his academic and professional credentials.

Sources revealed that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka has denied ever issuing a degree certificate to Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, contradicting his claims of graduating from the institution in 1985. The management of the university stated that after a thorough verification of its records, there was no evidence of Nnaji’s graduation or participation in any convocation ceremony during the stated period.
Additionally, an independent investigation carried out by Premium Times uncovered that the minister not only failed to complete his undergraduate program but also presented a forged NYSC certificate as part of his official documentation submitted to the Federal Government prior to his appointment.
Geoffrey Uche Nnaji’s Resignation Confirmed
The news of Nnaji’s resignation was officially confirmed by the presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, through a post shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on October 7, 2025. The announcement came shortly after weeks of mounting pressure on the minister to step down pending the outcome of ongoing investigations into the certificate scandal.
In his resignation letter, Geoffrey Uche Nnaji cited “relentless political blackmail and character assassination” by his opponents as the reason behind his decision to step aside, claiming that the controversy was politically motivated and aimed at tarnishing his reputation.
He stated that while he maintains his innocence and insists that the allegations are unfounded, he chose to resign in order to allow for transparency and to prevent further distractions within the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology.

Following the minister’s resignation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reportedly accepted his decision with immediate effect, thanking him for his contributions to the administration and wishing him success in his future endeavors.
In the official statement released by Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency emphasized its commitment to integrity, accountability, and transparency in public service, reiterating that the current administration would not tolerate any act of misconduct or dishonesty from its appointees.
“President Tinubu thanked Geoffrey Uche Nnaji for his service and dedication to national development, and he wishes him well in his future endeavours,” the statement read in part.
[h2]Public ReactionsThe development has sparked a wave of mixed reactions on social media and across political circles. While some Nigerians commended Nnaji for taking responsibility by stepping down, others called for his immediate prosecution to serve as a deterrent to public office holders who engage in forgery or fraudulent acts.
Political analysts have also noted that the resignation may be part of a larger accountability drive within the Tinubu administration, as the government seeks to maintain credibility both locally and internationally.
As investigations continue, many are calling for full transparency in verifying the educational backgrounds of political appointees to restore public trust in the nation’s governance system.
