Veteran Nollywood actor, Dele Odule, has recently shared his perspective on polygamy, emphasizing that Western cultural norms cannot erase or diminish Africa’s traditional acceptance of men having multiple wives. He stressed that personal responsibility, discipline, and the ability to provide for one’s family are far more important than blindly adhering to foreign standards or opinions.
The actor made these remarks while addressing rumours circulating about his personal life and various social media controversies, noting that public perception often misinterprets motivational messages and twists them into gossip for attention and online clout. “At a time, people claimed I had 10 children with 10 women. I simply agreed; after all, it’s not a crime in Nigeria. If it’s a sin, I’ll face it when I get to heaven,” he candidly stated, highlighting the challenges of navigating public scrutiny while staying true to one’s cultural roots.
Odule further explained that, in his view, there is nothing inherently wrong with a man having multiple wives as long as he is responsible, disciplined, and able to care for his household. “Polygamy is part of African culture. Western culture says one man, one wife, but we are Africans. The key is being responsible and disciplined,” he elaborated, highlighting the importance of balancing cultural practices with moral accountability and ethical living.
Balancing fame, family, and discipline
Reflecting on his career in Nollywood, Dele Odule acknowledged that fame and public attention often bring challenges, particularly in today’s social media-driven environment, where stories can easily be distorted for clicks and attention. “I have learnt not to talk too much or argue unnecessarily. If what’s being said doesn’t harm my career, I simply say, ‘I’ve heard you.’ As long as I’m not accused of any crime, I don’t take things to heart,” Odule noted, reflecting his calm and measured approach to handling rumours and public scrutiny.
Family, he explained, remains a cornerstone of his stability and grounding. At home, he prioritizes his role as a husband and father, ensuring that he dedicates a substantial portion of his time—around 70 per cent—to nurturing his loved ones. “Consistency, discipline, and self-discovery are what keep me grounded. Once you know who you are, you can overcome any challenge,” he stated, underlining the role of self-awareness and personal development in navigating both professional and personal life.
Advice to young actors: ‘chase mastery, not fame’
Dele Odule also shared advice for aspiring actors and young people entering the entertainment industry. He warned that fame, if pursued recklessly, can lead to distractions, mistakes, and unforeseen troubles. “If you’re coming into entertainment, be very careful. Some people get into trouble not because they planned to, but because they got carried away,” he cautioned, stressing the need for discipline and patience.
He advised young actors to prioritize skill, professionalism, and mastery of their craft over the pursuit of fame or money. “Don’t chase fame or money; chase mastery. Perfect your craft first; the fame and money will follow,” he explained, emphasizing that long-term success stems from dedication and excellence rather than immediate recognition or wealth.
Dele Odule also revealed that he pursued a Mass Communication degree later in life, not to switch careers but to expand his knowledge and complement his experience in acting. “Acting has always been my calling. I went back to school not to change careers but to improve myself. Education complements experience,” he added, highlighting his lifelong commitment to growth, self-improvement, and the development of his craft.
