He lamented that the conditions of the hostels were not only embarrassing but also dangerous for the wellbeing of students, describing the state of the buildings as “unfit for human habitation.”

According to Onyia, the situation reflects a broader failure in Nigeria’s education management system and highlights the urgent need for transparency and accountability in the use of public education funds.

Alex Onyia questions UNN’s use of TETFund allocation

Onyia went further to question how the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) had utilized its recently received N2.56 billion TETFund allocation, claiming there has been no visible improvement in the male hostels despite the huge funds reportedly disbursed for development projects.

The education consultant shared disturbing images showing dilapidated structures, broken walls, and poor sanitation, alleging that the management may have mismanaged or diverted part of the funds meant for rehabilitation.

He captioned his post with a message expressing outrage and disbelief at the situation.

“Here’s the recent TETFund allocation for UNN (N2.56 billion). Look at what they achieved with it in Male hostel. It’s a shame!” Onyia wrote in his viral post.

He added that students deserve better living conditions, and that the continued neglect of public university hostels sends a discouraging message to the youth striving for academic excellence under harsh conditions.

Public outrage trails Onyia’s revelation

Following Onyia’s revelation, social media erupted with reactions from Nigerians across different backgrounds — including current students, alumni, and education advocates — who expressed anger over the decay in one of Nigeria’s top universities.

Many users called for an independent probe into the university’s financial management and the use of TETFund allocations, urging the Federal Government to intervene before the situation worsens.

@aprilbox added: “Imagine this being the environment that’s supposed to produce people who’ll fix our power supply. They’ve never even lived with electricity or decent facilities.”

The viral photos, showing cracked walls, leaking roofs, and flooded hostel corridors, have sparked a renewed conversation about accountability in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions and the urgent need for reforms to restore the dignity of public universities.
